One Week In
After our first full week in Uganda we have quite a bit to update you on. First, our prayer request for a car has been answered! The purchase was not a simple process and took hours on the phone with our bank, but our payment finally went through and we will be receiving our car in the next day. Praise God! Up to this point, we have relied on bodas (motorcycles that drive people around) for most of our transportation so it will be much safer to have our car. Also, we have had a number of answered prayers when it comes to preparing our apartment to move in. We have connected with a number of different individuals both from Amazima and the Jinja community that have helped us purchase our furniture and appliances for our apartment. We have one more week (until next Thursday) at the guest house as we continue to set up our apartment, but we are feeling confident that we will be ready for our move when the day comes. Thank you so much for your prayer through the last week!
Other than the stress that came with banking complications and moving preparations, we have had an amazing time settling in so far. In just a week, we have made huge progress in getting to know Jinja, the people in community here, and of course the staff and children at the Amazima School. A few highlights of our first week included observing a science competition at school, attending a worship service on the school's campus, participating in a community volleyball game with people from throughout Jinja, playing volleyball on the Amazima campus with students, and making a trip to Kampala (the capital of Uganda) to do some shopping for household items. Our first week has been eventful and so much fun!
As we continue to settle, we will also be preparing more for the work we are doing here. Already, we have met with administration and co-teachers to lay the foundation for what we will be doing. Amazima has been so gracious in giving us time to settle before setting the expectations for our work here. That being said, we are both so excited to start that work as soon as we can! In the next week, Steve will be in the classroom observing a number of different classes and building good rapport with the students and the other teachers he will be working with. After this coming week, the students have a three week term break in which Steve will be preparing material to begin teaching in the third trimester. Jen has also begun preparation for her role as an aide in the Amazima staff children's school. She has met the students that she will be teaching (lower primary) along with the teacher that she will be assisting. Her help is very much needed! Jen will be a part time aide and is still searching for a second role in the community. With so many great organizations run in the Jinja area and many connections already made, we are sure Jen will find this role quite soon.
Areas for Prayer:
Continued prayer as we prepare our apartment and transition from the guest house to the apartment.
Prayer for Jen as she continues to pursue a second role here in Jinja.
Prayer for Steve as he works with administration and co-teachers to plan instruction for the last trimester.
Thank you so much for your prayer and support!
Much Love,
Jen and Steve
